Streets Of London

You are now in London,
That great sea, whose ebb and flow
At once is deaf and loud, and on the shore
Vomits its wrecks, and still howls on for more.
Yet in its depth what treasures!

Percy Bysshe Shelley

There are some places in the world that you grow fond of the first time you step foot in them. For me, London is one of them. I instantly fell in love with its vibrant energy, many moods and its diversity. Then, I was just one of millions of tourists that descend on London each year, roam its streets in awe of the overwhelming scale of it. Little did I know that a few years later I would be given the opportunity of a lifetime with a chance to live and work there.

Many years have gone past, and my love for London still has not faded away, almost like falling in love with the right person. Over the years your love changes, becomes deeper, grows beyond the initial attraction that brought you together. You become a part of each other, and every day you discover more things to love in that person. So after discovering all the city’s incredible iconic views, you start seeing beyond the obvious, and experience the true heart of London. The labyrinth of alleyways, passages, the sights and sounds of the streets always leave you wondering what is round the next corner. You can wander for hours through the maze of streets, often losing your way and finding yourself again. The fact that you might never reach the beginning or the end of your journey somehow does not seem to matter. You become a part of the endless flow of life, pulsing through the city’s veins.

For years my journey to work has taken me along the South Bank, sometimes past Westminster and along the Embankment, other times over the Millenium Bridge to St. Paul’s Cathedral. I have been admiring the views across the river, reminding myself how lucky I am to be in the city that holds a fascination and inspiration for so many people. I sometimes have to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming. I may walk the same streets every day, but never fail to find something new, something fresh, something that makes me feel even stronger about the place I love so much. Sometimes I am lucky to capture that with my camera to make those memories last.

Over the time I have become intrigued by the ever changing nature of street life. Streets are an amazing source of inspiration. Anything can happen at any time. Street entertainers, passers-by, a moment of kindness, or fun and laughter, moments of sadness. The interplay of shadows, reflections, puddles on the pavement, a sudden shaft of light in a back alley, unexpected beauty in a little detail. That is not to mention pastel tones of a sunrise or fiery colours of a sunset, so often set against the city skyline.

What I love about street photography is those moments that often happen in a split second. The moments that are continually being created by life, and are constantly vanishing, never to be seen again. It is about endless walks through the streets and taking joy from the unexpected, wherever I happen to be.
