Day 206 of 366: Walk along the Lakeshore

Early morning by a lake. A sliver of mist lingering just above the water surface, the sun streaming through the bright green canopy of leaves on the shore, no sound apart from bird chorus.

Oh summer, so beautiful!

Said a blade of grass to an autumn leaf, “You make such a noise falling! You scatter all my winter dreams.”

Said the leaf indignant, “Low-born and low-dwelling! Songless, peevish thing! You live not in the upper air and you cannot tell the sound of singing.”

Then the autumn leaf lay down upon the earth and slept. And when spring came she waked again — and she was a blade of grass.

And when it was autumn and her winter sleep was upon her, and above her through all the air the leaves were falling, she muttered to herself, “O these autumn leaves! They make such noise! They scatter all my winter dreams.”

  1. Beautiful shots – the second one makes me think of a Brian Patten poem:

    A Blade of Grass

    You ask for a poem.
I offer you a blade of grass.
You say it is not good enough.
    You ask for a poem.

I say this blade of grass will do.
It has dressed itself in frost,
    It is more immediate
Than any image of my making.

You say it is not a poem,
It is a blade of grass and grass
    Is not quite good enough.
I offer you a blade of grass.

    You are indignant.
You say it is too easy to offer grass.
    It is absurd.
Anyone can offer a blade of grass.

    You ask for a poem.
And so I write you a tragedy about
    How a blade of grass
Becomes more and more difficult to offer,

And about how as you grow older
    A blade of grass
    Becomes more difficult to accept.

    – Brian Patten
