Holborn Viaduct is taken for granted by many people who pass by every day. Yet it deserves more attention than it gets. It is an outstanding piece of Victorian engineering. It was built in the 19th century to span the valley of the old River Fleet, which had been covered and channelled underground. It is considered to be one of the first modern flyovers in central London. The architectural details include cast-iron arches, granite columns above exquisite gilded metal capitals, figurative bronze statues, four pavilions, at each side and either end, containing staircases for pedestrian access. There is no doubt I will find my way back there again.
