Christmas 2020 Is Not Cancelled

It is very difficult to feel festive at the moment. There is a new plague spreading round the world that stole our Christmas. All the headlines say "Christmas 2020 is cancelled" to remind us we'd better not have fun and to make us feel even more down than we already have been throughout the whole year.

I know things are very bad and terrifying indeed, but that doesn't mean we can't have Christmas at all. Yes, it has been severely curtailed, whether we like it or not. However, it is for the right reason. If we don't follow the government advice, it will cost us many lives and that will be the last such celebration for thousands more. I believe that none of us want to be the cause of overcrowded hospitals with people fighting for their breath and lives inside them.

Like everyone else, I would like to embrace our family and friends, wish them Merry Christmas, sit round the table and enjoy the traditional fun at the Christmas table. I haven't seen my Mum and the rest of my family and friends back in the Czech Republic for over a year. However, I don't want to do it at the expense of endangering their lives. I want to be able to celebrate many more years with every one of them. I would rather patiently wait, have a quiet time this year, knowing and hoping they will still be around next year. At the end of the day, they are just a phone call or a video call away. I know it's not the same as a personal touch, but it is the best thing that we can do for now.

Christmas is about giving and appreciating those we love. The best present you can give to them is to protect them. There will be the right time for meeting up again, and for many hugs and kisses. It is just not right now.

So my headline says "Christmas 2020 is not cancelled". We will still have a quiet celebration, thinking about those we love and looking forward to when we can rejoice at reuniting again in the near future.

Keep your loved ones in your thoughts and your heart. Stay safe, healthy and sound. Have a peaceful Christmas.

  1. Just like you my big family Christmas won’t be happening this year.  I think this is the best answer to present circumstances.  So let’s enjoy a peaceful Christmas and look forward to better times to come
